Tim Smith, the reality star of “Moonshiners” on the Discovery Channel, will be appearing at the Black Squirrel on Saturday, Nov. 10, starting at 6 p.m. Smith, a resident of Climax, Va., will be featured in the Tap Room of the Black Squirrel, along with his son J.T., just three days after the second season of the show gets under way. Smith will be available to sign autographs, pose for pictures and wax nostalgically on all things moonshining. Smith, chief of the Climax Volunteer Fire Department and a mechanic by trade, is a highly regarded expert in the making of moonshining. He also is something of a moonshine historian and has plenty of stories to tell from the hills of Pittsylvania County, Va., where much of the show has been filmed. The Black Squirrel, in feting a tradition-steeped but dying art, will have an ample stock of moonshine available, courtesty of the Asheville, N.C.-based Howling Moon Distillery. Chef Gene Sohn will employ a limited Appalachian-style menu to complement the spirits. Smith hopes to raise enough money — through his show, personal appearances, investors and persistence — to realize his dream of one day opening a legal moonshine distillery.
