This Plans to be a Barrel of Fun

Add wood and bring on the flavor. The Black Squirrel celebrates the age-old tradition of barrel aging beer on Friday (March 7), starting at 5 p.m., with 24 rare barrel-aged beers on tap and by the bottle.  The line-up includes: Alewerks Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter (draft, 9%); Bear Republic Wild Racer (bourbon-barrel-aged Racer 5 IPA, draft, 7.5%);  The Bruery Sour in the Rye (draft, 7.7%); Funkwerks 2012 Solena Belgian-Style Dark Ale (750mL bottle, 6.5%); Goose Island 2013 Bourbon County Stout (draft, 15%); Goose Island Lolita Wild Ale (brewed with raspberries, draft, 7%); Goose Island Matilda Lambicus Wild Ale  (draft, 7%);  Goose Island Sofie Paradisi Wild Ale (brewed with grapefruit, draft, 6.7%);  Goose Island 2010 Lolita Wild Ale (brewed with raspberries, 650mL bottle, 7%);  Goose Island 2012 Madame Rose Brown Kriek (with cherries, 650mL bottle, 7.1%);       Goose Island 2012 Juliet Wild Ale (aged with blackberries, 650mL bottle, 8%);  Great Divide Espresso Oak-Aged Yeti Russian Imperial Stout  (draft, 9.5%); Hardywood Reserve Bourbon-Barrel Imperial IPA (750mL bottle, 9.4%);  Hardywood Reserve Rum-Barrel Imperial Pumpkin Ale (750mL bottle, 10.5%);  Laughing Dog Bourbon Barrel The Dogfather Imperial Stout (draft, 9.5%);  Local Option Morning Wood Oak-Aged Coffee Ale (draft, 7.1%); Mad Fox Reynard Cabernet Barrel Black Saison (draft, 7.1%); Mother Earth Windowpane Peach Barrel-Aged Wheat Ale (750mL bottle, 8.3%); Mother Earth Windowpane Blackberries Barrel-Aged Wit (750mL bottle, 9%);      2012 New Holland Dragon’s Milk (draft, 10.5%); New Holland Incorrigible (white sour, draft, 4.9%); New Holland Blue Sunday Sour Ale (draft, 7%);  Sun King Pappy Van Muckle PVW Bourbon- Barrel-Aged (draft, 8%); and Widmer/Cigar City Gentlemen’s Club Bourbon Barrel-Aged American Strong Ale (draft, 10.5%). To complement the liquid treasure, the Black Squirrel chef will prepare a stinky cheese burger to accompany the sour beers and a stout burger for the dark beers. For more than 400 years, beer has been stored in barrels and aged to a bold, complex taste. Barrels are often made of oak, and many have been previously used for bourbon or wine to further enhance the layers of flavor.   Enjoy this sampling of barrel-aged beer that spans a range of styles.
